Defoe has identified himself as a devout Christian, and he told the Daily Mirror in 2010, "I don't drink or smoke and I've never touched drugs." Defoe said that his father was an alcoholic and credited his mother with keeping him focused on football while keeping him away from crime while growing up in a council house in Beckton, East London.

On 24 April 2009, his 26-year-old half-brother, Jade Defoe, a grime artist also known as Gavin or Esco Bar, died of head injuries following an assault in Leytonstone, London. On 7 June 2012, his father, Jimmy Defoe, died after a long battle with throat cancer.

Jermain Defoe to land England recall if he impresses in Sunderland's clash with Middlesbrough

Jermain Defoe can cement an astonishing England recall with an eye-catching display against Middlesbrough on Wearside on Sunday Defoe might be 33 but the Sunderland star is enjoying a late career purple patch and is a firm favourite with new England boss Sam Allardyce. And if he stars in the North East derby at the Stadium of Light with England spies watching closely it could end a three year international exile for Defoe.

Big Sam credits the experienced striker with playing a huge role in saving the Black Cats from relegation last season when the pair were together at the Stadium of Light. And after making a personal check on the former Tottenham attacker in Sunderland’s 2-1 opening day defeat against Manchester City , Defoe’s superbly executed goal against Pep Guardiola’s stars only confirmed his scoring pedigree. Allardyce was impressed with Defoe’s conditioning, hunger and ambition when he took Sunderland to Austria for a pre-season training camp before he was installed as England manager soon after.

And as Sunday People Sport exclusively revealed last month, Defoe could now be in line for a Three Lions swansong. The new England boss often championed Defoe’s case for an England recall when former Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson was in charge but to no avail. In reality, if he makes Big Sam’s first squad, Defoe won’t be a serious threat to Leicester star Jamie Vardy, Tottenham hit-man Harry Kane or injury-jinxed Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge who all played for England during the Euro 2016 Finals in France this summer.

But as a back-up striker with an instinct for goals and a calm temperament when chances present, Allardyce knows there are few more deadly coming off the bench than Defoe when he’s in goalscoring form. And including Defoe in his first England squad for the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Slovakia in Bratislava on September 4 would give Allardyce some insurance that he has an ideal impact sub ready and waiting on the bench if the Three Lions need a rescuing goal.

Defoe, often playing as a lone striker, scored 18 goals in all competitions for Sunderland last season including five crucial strikes in the last nine games of the campaign as Allardyce guided them to safety. And new Sunderland boss David Moyes knows he’ll be relying on goals from Defoe too this season.

Defoe made the last of his 55 England appearances in November 2013 in a friendly against Chile and has scored 19 goals for the Three Lions. His move to MLS side FC Toronto in 2014 only lasted eleven months but Hodgson interpreted Defoe’s decision to move to America as the end of his international career and didn’t pick him again.
